Wal-Mart, the Supreme Court, and class actions

Now I know that I am no Supreme Court Justice. But, something in my gut tells me that allowing up to 1.5 million individuals to join together in a single suit can have messy and far reaching implications...implications that I frankly don't believe our judicial system has the capacity, nor power, to handle. Yesterday, the Supreme Court heard arguments on whether hundreds of thousands of female workers have enough in common to join in a suit against mega store Wal-Mart on allegations of gender discrimination. Now I'm not contesting the validity of these women's claims...I don't even know enough to have an opinion on these women's claim. What worries me is that allowing a class action of this size and caliber might warp the legal foundations that this very action itself relies upon...

Love It : Willem Pirquin Desktop Illustrations

Not only do these desktop wallpapers by Belgium freelance illustrator Willem Pirquin take you away from your computer screen and back to being a little kid again, but they are free, too. It's a win-win situation.

Protesting Unemployment? I'll pass . . .

I couldn't help but feel a bit irked after reading that unemployed UVA law students are 'protesting' their jobless fate. How are they protesting? By blaming UVA, naturally.

For starters, these dudes made some terrible looking t-shirts. If you attend a top-ten law school, at least try to feign a little class?

Second, I'm all for protesting. If you want to get out there and stand up for what you believe in, go for it. But a line has to be drawn somewhere. In my humble, holier-than-thou, you're-reading-MY-blog-so-I-must-have-something-really-important-to-say opinion, these guys look like nothing more than a few spoiled kids who have had everything handed to them on silver platers their entire lives. As a law student, I did not come to school with the expectation that upon graduating, I would get a job. I came to law school with the expectation that I had to work my butt off to earn a job. And don't get me wrong, I deeply sympathize with the fate of these students--the job market is a scary place right now, a place that ten years ago I would have never imagined myself being terrified of. But come on, you can't expect to get hired...you have to work for it. Instead of spending however many hours organizing these 'demonstrations', designing t-shirts (ok, minutes, in the t-shirt design case), and loitering around admitted students day to 'protest' their tragic jobless situation, these guys could instead actually be out in the market looking and applying for jobs, instead of feeling sorry for themselves.

Check out wren's 2011 spring collection. The pieces are romantic yet practical, and I love how they can be dressed up or down.

The Public Defender Wears Prada

Okayyyyy. So I know for LC's first "substantive" post, it can't get more cliche than this. But, I couldn't resist. I came across this article (thanks, mom!) on Charlotte attorney Bree Laughrun's creative style and found it fitting for LC's inaugural post. Bree has found a way to stay true to her style while remaining an effective attorney. I love how she isn't afraid to incorporate the latest trends into her professional wardrobe...and her clients seem to love it too.

Thoughts?
